Accessibility legislation you should know
Equality Act 2010 (UK)
Requires service providers to make reasonable adjustments for disabled users. Inaccessible websites can constitute unlawful discrimination.
European Accessibility Act
Coming into force June 2025. Requires e-commerce sites and digital services to meet accessibility standards across the EU.
Public Sector Regulations
Public sector bodies must meet WCAG 2.1 AA and publish an accessibility statement. Non-compliance can result in enforcement action.
Common questions
What's the difference between WCAG A, AA, and AAA?
These are conformance levels. Level A covers basic requirements, AA is the standard most organisations target (and what legislation typically requires), and AAA is the highest level with the strictest criteria. We recommend AA as a practical baseline.
Can automated tools fully test accessibility?
No. Automated tools catch around 30% of issues. Manual testing is essential to assess things like keyboard navigation flow, screen reader experience, and whether content actually makes sense to users. Our audits combine both approaches.
How long does remediation typically take?
It depends on your site's size and current state. Minor fixes might take a few hours, while a site-wide overhaul could take several weeks. Our audit report includes effort estimates for each issue to help you plan.
Do you provide an accessibility statement?
Yes. After remediation work, we can help you draft a compliant accessibility statement for your website, including the required information about conformance level and contact details for feedback.
Can you fix the issues you find?
Absolutely. We can provide quotes for implementing fixes, whether that's a few specific issues or a complete accessibility overhaul. Many clients combine the audit with remediation work.
